Chemotherapy halts vision loss in children with optic pathway glioma
From the American Academy of Ophthalmology
This retrospective review evaluated visual function in 21 children with chiasmal or bilateral optic nerve glioma treated with chemotherapy, radiation or both. Systemic chemotherapy arrested the decline in visual acuity and stabilized vision on average for five years. At presentation, visual evoked potentials were a more sensitive indicator of optic pathway damage than visual acuity or optic nerve appearance. Although 80 percent achieved tumor reduction or stabilization, pre-existing visual damage – indexed by tumor volume and visual function – limited visual outcomes. Ophthalmology, June 2012
