Deadline Approaches to Become HIPAA 5010 Compliant
Physician practices have until April 1 to transition to HIPAA 5010 data standards. While the compliance date for implementing HIPAA 5010 was Jan. 1, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services granted a 90-day discretionary period for enforcement. A significant number of physician practices may already or could soon face serious cash-flow issues due to non-compliance with the HIPAA 5010 standards. The American Medical Association is working with CMS to address issues with HIPAA 5010 claims processing. An online form is on the AMA website for physician practices to report issues. A CMS complaint form also is available on the AMA website.
