Eye exam rate among elderly diabetics far below recommended levels

From the American Academy of Ophthalmology

Investigators analyzed a nationally representative sample of Medicare beneficiaries to identify factors associated with regular eye examination among elderly patients diagnosed with glaucoma, AMD, or diabetes mellitus. Subjects were followed for 5 years, divided into four 15-month periods. Even though they were insured for vision care, only one-third saw an eye care provider in all 4 follow-up periods. Almost one-quarter had only one eye examination during the 4 follow-up periods. Exam rate among patients with diabetes and no eye complications was particularly low. Limited physical and cognitive function and greater distance to an ophthalmologist were deterrents to regular exams. Ophthalmology, December 2014
