Multivitamin Reduces Risk of Cataract, But Not AMD
From the American Academy of Ophthalmology
This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluated the effects of long-term daily multivitamin supplementation in 14,641 male physicians age 50 and older. After more than 10 years of treatment and follow-up, multivitamin use was associated with a modest but significant reduction in cataract, especially nuclear cataract, which is consistent with results of two previous trials of multivitamin use in cataract prevention. However, multivitamins had no significant effect on visually significant AMD. Ophthalmology, February 2014
