New OCT-guided Surgery for Anterior Corneal Scarring Shows Promise

From the American Academy of Ophthalmology

Investigators report four-month results from a novel technique using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) guided transepithelial phototherapeutic keratectomy to treat anterior corneal scars. OCT is used to measure the maximum depth of the opacity and crater, followed by two corneal treatments with an excimer laser –a myopic ablation performed through the epithelium to the depth of the opacity, and a hyperopic ablation to control the refractive outcome. All 22 patients gained a minimum of one line of BCVA. Corneal topography also showed significant improvement in corneal cylinder. No complications were observed and no patient required or desired subsequent treatment. American Journal of Ophthalmology, December 2013
