Long-term nutritional supplements can improve dry eye
From the American Academy of Ophthalmology
This multicenter, double-masked placebo-controlled trial included 38 patients with bilateral tear dysfunction who were randomized to supplemental gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs)or placebo for six months. Supplementation significantly improved Ocular Surface Disease Index scores and corneal smoothness and suppressed conjunctival inflammation. Additionally, placebo-treated subjects had a significant increase in the number of activated CD11c-positive dendritic cells in the conjunctival epithelium compared with the supplement-treated group at six months.
