Posterior Retinal Structure Correlates with Visual Acuity in Advanced ROP

From the American Academy of Ophthalmology

Investigators compared ETDRS visual acuity outcome with retinal structural outcome at the 6-year follow-up examination of infants randomized in the Early Treatment for Retinopathy of Prematurity study. Most eyes (87 percent) with normal retinal structure had visual acuity better than 20/200, although fewer than half (40.7 percent) had visual acuity of 20/40 or better. Most discordant outcomes were due to favorable structural but unfavorable functional outcomes. In many of these children, subnormal acuity could be attributed to ocular causes such as optic atrophy, nystagmus and amblyopia. Archives of Ophthalmology, December 2012
