Statins May Reduce Risk of Open-angle Glaucoma

From the American Academy of Ophthalmology

Using data from a national health care claims database, investigators analyzed the relationship between statin use and risk of developing open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in people with hyperlipidemia age 60 and older. After adjusting for confounding factors, treated patients were shown to have a decreased risk of developing OAG, of progressing from glaucoma suspect to OAG, and of requiring pressure-lowering medications. Patients prescribed statins for one year had a 5 percent decreased risk, while those prescribed statins for two years had a 9 percent decreased risk. Ophthalmology, October 2012
