New diagnostic test for early glaucoma shows promise

From the American Academy of Ophthalmology

Investigators evaluated the diagnostic ability of macular ganglion cell–inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness to discriminate normal eyes from eyes with early glaucoma and to compare it with that of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and optic nerve head (ONH) analysis using spectral domain OCT. They found that most macular GCIPL parameters have excellent ability to discriminate between normal eyes and eyes with early glaucoma, and their diagnostic performance is comparable to that of the best peripapillary RNFL and ONH parameters.
