Triamcinolone may not improve visual, functional outcomes following vitrectomy
From the American Academy of Ophthalmology
This retrospective review included 58 patients who underwent vitrectomy and membrane peeling for idiopathic macular epiretinal membrane. At the end of surgery 27 eyes were injected with triamcinolone acetonide and 31 eyes received no injection. At three months follow-up, there were no significant differences in visual acuity, foveal thickness or complications between groups. They speculate that macular edema in these patients is more likely a result of structural deformations from mechanical traction rather than a breakdown of the blood-retinal barrier. Retina, May 2012.
