IOLs Linked to Higher Postop Complications in Aphakic Infants

From the American Academy of Ophthalmology

This analysis of data from the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study details the rate and character of adverse events and additional surgeries required by age 5. Patients treated with primary IOL implantation prior to 7 months of age had more adverse events and required more additional intraocular surgeries over the first five years following surgery for unilateral congenital cataract, with most occurring during the first postoperative year. The number of adverse events that developed in years two through five were relatively few compared to the first postoperative year (54 vs.110), with nearly half related to glaucoma.
